Description: This is a Knights Cross of War Merit Cross with Swords 1957 issue rare award. This piece has wear on it, indicating that it could have been worn by a veteran. Has maker mark 41 which is most likely the mark for Gebrüder Bender. Gebrüder Bender was a jeweler during WW2 that made War Merit Crosses. The medal has some unknown white specs on it(see photos). During WW2(1939-1945) Germany issued an award called the War Merit Cross. The War Merit Cross was awarded for advancing the war effort for Germany. There was a 2nd and 1st class award(medal) of the war merit cross. After receiving both the 2nd and 1st class you could be eligible for the Knights Cross of War Merit Cross. This was a silver colored neck award. War Merit Crosses could have swords and no swords (swords meaning the recipient was in the military and no swords meaning the recipient was a civilian). This was a very rare award with only 118 of the original with swords. After the war the German government banned the public display of the swastika. Since almost every WW2 medal has a swastika(the war merit crosses had swastikas) veterans could not wear them. In 1957 the West German Government authorized the making of WW2 awards without swastikas. This was one of those awards. These are rare. Thank you
