Description: A fantastic original WW2 US Army map of Italy featuring MONTECASSINO (MONTE CASSINO) on the formidable GUSTAV LINE. Dated April 1944 (just a few weeks ahead of the fourth and decisive Battle of Monte Cassino) and produced at a highly detailed scale of 1:25,000 - as used by infantry troops. It came to me with a number of similar maps from the Italian Campaign, including a 'field composite' of four maps at this scale with Monte Cassino at its centre. The collection also contains the adjoining map to the East entitled 'CASSINO'. It would seem that the original owner of the composite sheet had a few examples of each of the component maps, but used his composite during the Battle, leaving the other sheets in near perfect condition. The map listed here features the Western half of CASSINO and the iconic ABBAZIA DI MONTECASSINO (Abbey of Montecassino) which was destroyed by Allied bombers. The map is so detailed that the Abbey's layout can clearly be seen, as can the winding 'hair pin' roads leading to the summit. The map also features a section of the RIVER LIRI, the pivotal 'HIGHWAY 6' and the town of 'PIGNATARO INTERAMNA' which gives the sheet its name. This is a very rare map, and one I thought I would never see. Not surprisingly, the terrible events that took place here have left their mark on History.
