The design of the round kitchen timer is characteristic of industrial designer Richard Sapper's fusion of technology and style. It is reduced to a minimum and is pragmatic: the mechanism turns inside the shell, so that the remaining time is visible from above and from the side through a small round opening. With a diameter of 7 centimetres, this small timer, available in black, white and red, vaguely resembles scientific instruments or car accessories. It is set by rotating it only once up to a maximum time of 60 minutes, after which the Minitimer sounds. The success of this design was immediate. Its initial production was carried out by Ritztalora, based near Milan, and, under license, by the French company Terraillon. The latter company, founded in 1942, had produced bathroom and kitchen scales from the beginning, and is today a leader in the market for these products. Terraillon has always successfully married design to technology, a fact largely explained by the close collaboration between their designers and the research and development department. Sapper's creative approach to engineering design is evident in his best-known designs. Specializing in electronic products such as radios, televisions and lighting fixtures, Sapper became known for his designs on the exterior of these products. This perhaps also explains the success of the timer, whose container cleverly cut horizontally in the central part. The Minitimer is an elegant and discreet object, much appreciated over time and sought after, and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and that of the Center Pompidou in Paris.
