Description: This is a set of 9 buttons from the Hudson County Lunatic Asylum made by the Waterbury Company. These buttons were identical copies of the buttons worn by asylum staff in the 1890s using the original dies sometime in the 1990s. The Hudson County Lunatic Asylum opened in1864 in Secaucus, New Jersey and is currently still in operation as the Meadowview Psychiatric Hospital. The buttons are in great unused condition. The larger buttons measure .80 of an inch in diameter, and the small ones are .57 of an inch in diameter.
