Description: Here is a a OUTSTANDING true vintage (1930-1940s) “Style Bilt Hats” Boater hat. 3 distinct layers of straw. As we looked all the way around the brim edge we can see 3 layers all the way around the brim. This was most likely manufactured in Italy. Italy was known for their outstanding Boater hat manufacturing! This is an extremely well made sturdy hat! We have only seen one Boater similar to this one that was a 1930s Stetson Boater. This is not the typical Boater you see in the Stetson line but has a tighter and thinner straw weave and the corners one the brim edge have smaller but distinctive points on the brim edge. It’s very sturdy but not as stiff as the standard boater. If you want the boater to fit a slight bit loose this will fit a size 7-1/8. If you like it to fit snugly and won’t fall off it will snugly fit a 7-1/4.As we are measuring it, the sizer says it’s a fraction over a perfect 7-1/8. If you need a hat sizer Dad has a few old vintage ones in his workshop. You’ll need to write and ask Dad to add one if you need it?Dating this was done with some help from 2 of dad’s hat collector friends. By looking at the hat liner logo and leather sweatband they were able to date this from the 1930s though early 1940s. Dad had dated this to the late 1920-30s, so he wasn’t too far off.4 layer boaters were manufactured from about 1915-1920, then to save on costs then they started manufacturing the 3 layer boater until from about 1920s though 1940s, then the 1950s went to the 2 layer was manufactured, to save money of course. We added a close-up picture so you can see the distinct 3 layers, see pictures. And if you have any questions please write to us.Has anyone ever heard or have any knowledge that any true vintage at this time period were actually manufactured in Boston or any other place but in Italy? Please write to us if you have any good information? We would greatly appreciate that! The machinery to manufacture these hat were quite complicated! And very Expensive. There were not many of these around so most of these boaters were manufactured at only a few manufacturing sites and then sold under contract to customers that they were contracted too. Maybe you don’t know this but these are made from actual bonded straw, after the straw as processed though machinery first. Those less expensive single layer of straw leaves a lot to be desired, It’s just doesn’t feel the same either. Does anyone know if the new ones are actually made of straw or something synthetic? No matter how it’s shipped it will be extremely well packed and bubble wrap around it, so it insure a very safe arrival! We took pictures of every angle so you could see the condition of the hat, there is no reason to hide anything. If you do have any questions please write to us. You can see in the pictures, that we took closeup pictures all around the hat so you can see what the brim edge looks like in detail! You can select a picture and blow it up to see what minimal wear to the edge it has and what those corner on the edge look like. Again, WE HID NOTHING on the great boater hat! It has the aged patina on the straw. This is a very solidly manufactured hat! This is NOT a floppy hat! It’s a great example of great true vintage Boaters hats were manufactured. This was a hat that was worn often back then and I do remember it sitting right at the front door on an open ended nail so it could be removed quickly and worn. It’s not seen when worn but there is a tiny circular hole that someone carefully crafted so it could be hung up. Yes there is some minor wear but it’s very slight and no one will ever notice the tiny defects. So please looks at all the pictures! We did fill the picture gallery with every angle so there is NOTHING to hide! That patina around the edge of the leather sweatband we examined very closely. We tested all around the leather sweatband it is completely and securely attached all the way around the hat! No breaks! Not dried out but still very soft and pliable. You can see in 2 pictures how we lifted the leather up without disturbing the secure attachment! It’s the same all around the hat!If you have any questions please write us.DetailsSo there is an under-tag that states size 7-1/8 but this measures to slightly over that by and 1/8 of an inch. How you want to wear the hat is all up to you.If you want to wear this is the original traditional way, on the top of the forehead then it will fit a 7-1/4 perfectly! If you wanted to wear this on the center of the forehead then a 7-1/8+ will fit perfectly! We measure each hat that we list 3 times, suing different methods to verify its actual size. This measures to a fraction over a perfect 7-1/8 at 22-1/2 inches, on the standardized sizing (Tilley) charts. The Tilley hat chart is still in use today by most every manufacturers.Size 7-1/8+ or 22-1/2 inches or 57.3Color naturally aged strawLength 14 inchesWidth 12.2 inchesBrim 2.75 inchesNote typical Boater brim width is normally 2.5 inches so this is wider!Height 3.4 inches, this is a true vintage boater! Fancy 3 color Grosgrain ribbon is 1.65 inches, Main color band is black, 3 colors on the inner center band, what looks like a gray - purplish, yellow center and peach type colored lower band. The color description are our very best. Also we added a close-up of a section so you can se exactly how fancy and detailed the grosgrain ribbon is! It’s the only one we have ever seen like this! Even spaced are these line that are going just through the center stripes! You must see the pictures we added to really appreciate the detailing on this grosgrain ribbon? He has collected for 60 something years now and it is time to sell them. We stand behind the eBay garentee and have NEVER had and issue with returns. No smoking or PetsThank you for looking NOTE: when we ship Dad’s hats out we use strong shipping boxes and each hat we ship is FULLY INSURED and we are no longer going to handle broken box insurance claims. We discovered that one buyer crushed their shipping box and asked for a hefty partial refund. The shipper sent us a picture of the box sitting at the front door and it was NOT CRUSHED? We also discovered that because we were NOT in possession of the box it was impossible for us to file the claim. So now and in the future all claims will be handled by the buyer of the hat or item we ship. Again we ALWAYS carefully pack each hat so it will not be crushed in a good strong shipping box. There are always some Bad Apples around who make everyone’s life impossible! It not fair to the rest of the GOOD FOLKS but it’s a fact of life these days! If you have any questions please write to us. Thank you for your understanding.
