Description: This item is from Vietnam and was purchased in 2007. It is a representation of a statuette from the Champa kingdom, in what is today central and southern Vietnam. The kingdom flourished between 200 BC & 1832 AD. Influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism, the kingdom boasted an elaborate artistic tradition characterized by exquisite sculptures and artifacts that reflected the people’s religious beliefs, cultural diversity and artistic ingenuity. Sculptures played a central role in Champa’s religious practices with intricate stone carvings and bronze statues depicting Hindu deities, Buddhist Boddhisatva’s and mythical figures. These were sculpted in various poses and iconographic forms conveying their divine attributes. This sculpture is a representation of such deity. In a traditional Hindu dancing pose, handmade from a bronze mold, she elegantly stands on one leg on a pedestal. The Hindu Goddess is thin and elegant. Reinforcing the dance and music ritual, the pedestal also serves as a bell.
