This is a sculptural head of the Greek goddess of Love , Aphrodite , the counterpart of the Roman goddess of Love , Venus. It is mounted in the fashion that many truly ancient artifacts are mounted and displayed , on a steel rod set into a square wooden base for stability. Once actual antiquities were discovered in other distant land they were routinely decapitated and the heads brought back as booty. Mounting them in this manner allowed a 360 degree view when they were displayed. It became a standard method and is used today even for reproductions like this one . One of the ways pieces are identified today as being plundered is they degree to which they are broken or in parts.
