The aboriginal Indians of the northern part of Panama and southern part of Costa Rica developed a very extensive and highly skilled craftsmanship in working gold, especially casting by the lost wax method. It is thought that the metal working art might have come into Central America from the Andean cultures of South America around 1000 A.D. The pre-Columbian cultures of the Chiriqui region were flourishing when the Spanish arrived in 1502 A.D. The combination of frog and serpent motifs was very common and was involved in their beliefs. Authorized, copyrighted reproduction in gold electroplated metal from the original in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., by Alva Museum Replicas, New York.
