It only interrupts the image of the posing soldier on the corner of his mouth. The rest of the episodes of emulsion loss on the glass, happen in the gray background. The fancy, ornate Gutta Percha hard case, with ornate, highly decorative, bas-relief figurative imagery, is largely undamaged except for one area where there's some minor loss. There are also a few minor dings on the edges and corners of the Gutta Percha hard case. The purple stamped velvet insert's intact and in well-preserved overall condition. A rare early US Civil War ambrotype of a 'New Hampshire boy' being immortalized in a photograph, presumably before the beginning of his service for the Union Army and a keepsake for perhaps a fiancee, wife or mother and father, left behind. This, as with all other US Civil War daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes, may have been the last photographs of these men while still alive. Very scarce. Discovered in a New Hampshire estate. With tremendous human presence. Really wonderful. Not perfect but still very handsome. Estate fresh. Unopened.
