Description: KEYWORDS: friction damping PLEASE NOTE: I ship to USA only. Depending on buyer's location eBay may collect state sales tax. Price is firm. Listed here is a steam turbine rotor blading component. It is a lacing pin made of the alloy Ti-6AL-4V. In application this pin spans a pair of large, last stage steam turbine blades. Each end of the pin is situated in a hole near the tip of each of two adjacent airfoils and when the turbine is spinning the pin is thrown radially outward with great force against the restraining blades. If there is relative tangential motion between the two blades, as in a first mode resonant response, then friction damping will be induced which is intended to reduce the amplitude of the vibration and therefore vibratory stress on the blades. A screw is used at each end of the pin to retain it in the blades. I do not know what the screw material is. If nothing else, the pin is a small sample of the Titanium alloy Ti-6AL-4V known for its low mass density and great hardness. It is a much-used aerospace material, particularly where low density or low weight and/or great strength are critical properties. It is also a small artifact from the largest steam turbines (65 MW range) produced and the now-closed Moore/Worthington/ McGraw-Edison/Turbodyne/Dresser-Rand Steam Turbine Operation in Wellsville, New York. The company operated successfully for over 100 years with its long reign ended by grossly incompetent manglement. I've heard that folks operating these machines have been removing the lacing pins. One can only hope for their sake that they stand behind their equipment, and not beside it. Added, at the end, are a few pics I took waaaaay back when, of installed lacing pins. Please ask any questions you might have prior to bidding or buying. Thank you.
