Description: The Diary of Samuel Pepys - Vol 1-9 - Harper Collins/University Of California - NEW This is the complete set of Diaries by Samuel Pepys, does not include volume 10 which is a companion and volume 11 that is the index. When originally purchased, they were not part of the set. As shown in the pictures, these paperback books have never been opened, read or removed from the original shrink wrap. The strip of shrink wrap that was placed around all 9 books to hold in one stack for shipping is still intact. 9780520225794 is the only ISBN number I can provide without breaking the warp. As you can see if you look it up, it is for Volume 1 of the set. The Diary of Samuel Pepys, Vol. I: 1660, Samuel Pepys, Robert Latham (Editor), William G. Mathews (Editor) Samuel Pepys is as much a paragon of literature as Chaucer and Shakespeare. His Diary is one of the principal sources for many aspects of the history of its period. In spite of its significance, all previous editions were inadequately edited and suffered from a number of omissions―until Robert Latham and William Matthews went back to the 300-year-old original manuscript and deciphered each passage and phrase, no matter how obscure or indiscreet. The Diary deals with some of the most dramatic events in English history. Pepys witnessed the London Fire, the Great Plague, the Restoration of Charles II, and the Dutch Wars. He was a patron of the arts, having himself composed many delightful songs and participated in the artistic life of London. His flair for gossip and detail reveals a portrait of the times that rivals the most swashbuckling and romantic historical novels. In none of the earlier versions was there a reliable, full text, with commentary and notation with any claim to completeness. This edition, first published in 1970, is the first in which the entire diary is printed with systematic comment. This is the only complete edition available; it is as close to Pepys’s original as possible. Since these are all still sealed, I did not want to remove from the shrink wrap, but I have taken pictures from all sides to show you the actual condition. There are places that the shrink wrap is starting to split or has torn just from age. These books have been stored for over 20 years and do show dust accumulated in the creases of the shrink warp. I have not tried to remove the dust as I don't want to stain the books where the shrink wrap has split, you will be the only one to completely open each and every book. You will receive all 9 books (5 by 8 inches) as shown in the pictures. They will be boxed to be protected during mailing by Media Mail, unless you want to upgrade to Priority Mail. Please wait for the pictures to load. I have taken all of the pictures, they show the condition of the item. I do not retouch any part of the photo, what you see is what you get. Please E-mail me with any questions. Pay pal is preferred and shipped next day. Sorry, no international sales.
