Description: About the Artist Born: 1930 - Hackensack, New JerseyDied: 1996 - Columbia County, PennsylvaniaKnown for: Imaginary landscape, figure, still life and portrait painting Name variants: Steve BagnellStephen Bagnell was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, January 4, 1930. As a young man he dreamed of becoming a cartoonist. Growing up in a tumultuous family, however, he put his dream on hold and instead ran away. Lying about his age, he joined the Army at the age of 16. The stint in the Army provided him with a government sponsored education of his choosing. He selected the Art Students League of New York City, and became interested in pursuing the fine arts.He met and married Joyce Mahon at the age of 18 and became a parent at 20 years of age. Soon life became a struggle. During those years, Stephen worked as a house painter, spending all his spare hours painting.. Stephen Bagnell was born in 1930 and was primarily inspired by the 1930s. Internationally this period can be best characterized by the conflict between the world’s foremost political philosophies - Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. In the United States, the Great Depression had a tremendous influence on artistic production, with a number of artists taking inspiration from the agrarian and the humble man in the streets. It was the first time in US history that widespread collectives of artists began to address politics, and tried to use their art to influence society. Artists held exhibitions on social and political themes such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, anti-lynching, anti-fascism, and workers' strikes.
