Description: The SS City of Montgomery was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and delivered to the Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah—also known as the Savannah Line—in 1910. It was one of two new passenger ships (along with the City of St. Louis) that joined the fleet that year. The Savannah Line played a significant role in the development of Savannah as a major port. It provided a crucial link between the interior of Georgia and northern cities like New York and Boston, and the company's operations were closely tied to Savannah's waterfront development since the mid-19th century. The line continued to operate until World War II, when wartime conditions along the Atlantic Coast forced the discontinuation of its service in March 1942.
