Madison Mitchell (1901 -1992), this carved wood canvasback decoy is a true gem. The decoy is signed by the artist himself. Made in the United States, this vintage decoy is a rare find and would make a great addition to any hunting or sporting goods collection. This decoy is typical of the artist's work and similar to the decoy pictured on the dust jacket of the book by Charles Lee Robbins, "R. Madison Mitchell - His Life and Decoys." The decoy has its original paint including painted eyes as worked by the famed carver from Havre de Grace, Maryland. Mitchell’s decoys are showcased in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, but most of his work is immortalized in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, Maryland. It measures approximately 15 1/2" long and 7 1/2" high. I have included several photos of the signature and date which are difficult to read. Original owner thought the year was 1961, but it may be another year ending in the number 1. Look at the photos and make your own decision.This very old decoy shows signs of use and age.
