Daniels, on the life, service and character of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The oration was delivered under the auspices of the Virginia General Assembly in 1890. It is signed by HON. Leland Stanford, who was the 8th Governor of California serving during the American Civil War, and founder of Stanford University, in California. The oration presents at the life, public service and character of Jefferson Davis. It addresses numerous aspects of Davis, including his service to his native State of Mississippi, his Mexican War service, his service in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party, his service as the Secretary of War prior to the American Civil War, his selection and service to be the President of the Confederate States of America, his imprisonment, his life after being released, and his death. It presents many interesting aspects of in the life and service of Davis not found elsewhere. The author and orator, Daniels was an American lawyer, author, and Democratic politician from Lynchburg, Virginia, and served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly and both houses of the U.S. Congress from 1885 to 1887, and in the U.S. Senate from 1887 until his death in 1910. Daniel was sometimes referred to as the "Lame Lion of Lynchburg", alluding to his permanent disability incurred during the Battle of the Wilderness, while serving as a Major in the Confederate Army. After Virginia seceded from the Union, Daniel enlisted in a Lynchburg cavalry troop, but by early May secured a commission as a second lieutenant in the 27th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded during the First Battle of Bull Run. While convalescing, Daniel was transferred to the 11th Virginia Infantry, and earned promotions to first lieutenant and later adjutant. Daniel served in the Confederate Army until 1864, eventually attaining the rank of Major. On March 24, 1863, he became a staff officer for Major General Jubal A. Early (also from Lynchburg), under whom he served in the Gettysburg Campaign, among others. In May 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness, a minie Ball shattered Daniel's femur. He thereafter had to use a crutch to walk, and he resigned his commission. This original, antique wrap/booklet is signed by HON. Leland Stanford. Stafford (1824 - 1893) was an American attorney, industrialist, philanthropist, and Republican Party politician from California. He served as the 8th Governor of California during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1863 and represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 1885 until his death in 1893. He and his wife Jane founded Stanford University, named after their late son. Stanford became a successful merchant and wholesaler after migrating to California in 1852 during the Gold Rush; he built a business empire. He was an influential executive of the Central Pacific Railroad and later of the Southern Pacific railroads from 1861 to 1890; these positions gave him tremendous power in the Western United States which left a lasting impact on California. He also played a significant role as a shareholder and executive in the early history of Pacific Life and Wells Fargo. He was the first Republican governor of California. Stanford is widely considered a robber baron. This original, antique wrap/booklet is in excellent overall condition and it comes protected in a sturdy, archival sleeve. The book is complete. It is generally clean, but has some discoloration to the front cover as shown. The booklet is tight with a touch of light edge wear. The signature of HON. Leland Stanford on the cover is sharp and clear. The pages are free of any writing. There is no foxing, stamps, pasteboards or other markings in the booklet. It is not an ex-library booklet. It contains 46 pages. Overall, it’s an excellent condition, original, first edition, antique booklet by a former Confederate officer, and State and National legislature from Virginia, and signed by the 8th Governor of California who served during the Civil War.
