Description: Scott No. 111L1, New York City Express Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Green Glazed uncancelled with bottom left corner margins and trace of adjoining stamp at left, just into at top, affixed to folded letter datelined "N.York July 29, (18)47" and addressed to Urbana Ohio The stamp is guaranteed genuine, but I cannot guarantee it to have originated on this cover. Nonetheless, this is very scarce with about fifteen covers known in total for the post's two issues -- the Black on Green (Scott 111L1, 11 known) and the Orange on White (Scott 111L2; 4 known) stamps. All covers are to-the-mails usages, dated from June 20, 1847 to September 16, 1847 (per Larry Lyons' article in the October 2010 issue of "The Penny Post"), and addressed to locations outside of New York City. About half are tied. Little is known of this post. Lyons notes in his article that "it has been suggested that the owner of this post was J&E Brooks Publishers operating out of 1 Nassau Street." The great similarity between this stamp, known colloquially as "Boyd's Imposter" and the Boyd's Eagle series can mislead collectors into thinking that this stamp is common, when in fact, this stamp is far rarer, as previously noted. The letter is from a horse trader on a business trip. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ BUY WITH CONFIDENCEI am a true professional philatelist, doing this for a living since 1995.
