Description: Special Note; first and foremost let me declare I am not and do not pretend to be an expert on antique books. I only know what I'm advised and/or informed of by others who claim to be experts and/or experienced antique book collectors. To that end, all I can do is try my very best to be as accurate as I possibly when describing the books I list. If you read something that isn't correct, or I have mistakenly over looked, please contact me so I can revise the listing accordingly ASAP. For your consideration is this great, wonderful, 101 year old, ORIGINAL, 1923 edition book, highlighting the works of JENS PETER JACOBSEN aka J. P. JACOBSEN. THE BOOK IS PRINTED ENTIRELY IN THE DANISH LANGUAGE; NOT IN ENGLISH. This book features the collective writings of several of Jacobsen's literary works. The book is entitled "Samlede Skrifter - Andet Bind" which I'm advised by a native born Danish man that this loosely translates to "Collective Writings - Second Volume". The book was most likely published in Denmark and is printed in what may be considered the "old" Danish language (I'm not for certain what language it is printed in; it could very possibly be in another regional/Scandinavian language). For your further evaluation I researched and discovered the below text regarding the book's author J. P. Jacobsen. To that end, I copied, and am including, his brief biography for your review. J. P. Jacobsen: Jens Peter Jacobsen was born in Thisted, Denmark on April 7, 1847 and died on April 30, 1885. He was the eldest of five children of a prosperous merchant. Jacobsen was a Danish novelist, poet and scientist in Denmark. He began the naturalist movement in Danish literature and was a part of the modern breakthrough. Jacobsen went to school in Copenhagen and was a student at the University of Copenhagen in 1868. As a boy, he showed a remarkable talent for science, in particular botan. In 1870, although he was already secretly writing poetry, Jacobsen adopted botany as a profession. He was sent by a scientific body in Copenhagen to report on the flora of the islands of Anholt. Around this time, the discoveries of Charles Darwin began to fascinate him. Realizing that the work of Darwin was not well known in Denmark, he translated The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man into Danish. When still young, Jacobsen was struck by tuberculosis which eventually ended his life. His illness prompted travels to southern Europe, cut him off from scientific investigation, and drove him to literature. He met the famous critic Georg Brandes, who was struck by his powers of expression, and under his influence, in the spring of 1873; Jacobsen began his great historical romance, Marie Grubbe. The book covers are deep red leather (appears to be fine pig skin) covered boards that features a gold colored foil embossed floral design in the center of both the front and back covers. Atop the book's spine there is a light green colored horizontal rectangular shaped stamped designed that is adorned with (5) five lines of gold colored foil embossing that read as follows. "J. P.""Jacobsen""Samlede""Skrifter""2" The top of the spine have approximately .25" long small tears in the leather hinge on both the front and back covers. The remainder of the book's spine remains strong and tight. Please refer to the description photographs to confirm the condition of this book and for more details about what I have described. The book has a total of 428 numbered pages (not including several unnumbered pages at the back of the book). The book measures approximately 7.0" tall by 4.75" wide and 1.25" thick. All the pages are firmly intact and secured within the book's tight original binding. There is no damage, foxing, repairs or any handwritten notations on any of the text pages. Please refer to the description photos to confirm the condition of the book and for more details about what I have described. Overall this antique book would make a marvelous and welcomed edition to anyone's antique book collection. The book remains in very good condition for being 101 years old. As you would expect to find on a book of this age there are slight wear and bumping to the cover corners as can be confirmed in the description photos. The book's pages retain sharp edges and corners with no curled and/or "dog eared" corners.Look at the photos closely as they confirm the condition of the antique book I describe and accurately depict exactly what you will receive of you purchase this piece. If you have any questions, concerns or would like additional photos of any particular part of the book, please email me and I will respond ASAP.
