Unexamined out of the frame, it appears to be in excellent condition. This lithograph is based on a painting of the same title painted in 1940 when Dali was living in America. Dali believed that the painting marked his return to a 'classical' style, with a with a more precise technique and greater balance. The figures, particularly the horses, are rendered in the style of the old masters, who Dali had studied and admired. He attributed the painting to Dr. Otto Rank, a psychoanalyst who theorized that neurosis could be traced back to birth trauma. Dali claimed he had pre-birth memories and recalled his birth as traumatic. Always wanting to return to the womb, there are photos of Dali curled up in a fetal position inside an egg. Female centaurs, mythical half human-half horse creatures from Greek mythology, have openings in their stomach from which human babies emerge. In "The Secret Life," DalĂ wrote that he envied marsupials because "the children can come out of, and go back into, the maternal uterine paradise."
