She was renowned for being the greatest beauty of her age - certainly in the city of Florence. At La Giostra (a jousting tournament) in held 1475 in Florence, Giuliano Medici entered the contest bearing a banner on which was a picture of Simonetta painted by Botticelli himself, beneath which was the French inscription La Sans Pareille, meaning "The unparalleled one". From then on Simonetta became known as the most beautiful woman in Florence, and later the most beautiful woman of the Renaissance. Unfortunately all to common to Renaissance Italy, she died an untimely premature death at only 23. Sandro Botticelli (Florence c.1445-1510) is synonymous with Florence’s golden age. Apprenticed to Filippo Lippi, he is best known for his two masterpiece paintings, The Birth of Venus and Primavera (Spring) currently in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
