Rare PCGS PR1952 Superbird Quarter FS-902 with Hand Engraved Tail Feathers

Description: Item Description This is a rare PCGS PR65 1952 quarter, listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-902, the "Superbird". It is been affectionately called a "Superbird" because of what appears to be a raised "S" in the center of the Eagle's chest. However, this rare variety is a very late die state, the last of eight different die states identified by me and prominent Washington quarter expert Jose Cortez several years ago from the Gene Witcosky collection of "Superbirds". This specimen has hand engraved lines extending from the bottom of the Eagle's tail feathers to the branch and beyond in an attempt to recreate tail feathers from what was apparently overpolishing of that area of the die. PCGS has only graded a handful, and not all were in gem condition. This is an interesting variety which occurred during a period in the early 1950's when the "Superman" series was was popular.
