Ty Warner began his company in 1986, beginning with a line of under-stuffed life-sized plush cats.This "Otto" the Otter was released 6 years later, in 1992, and he is notable for having an unusual cuddly shape, but Otto was not designed to be understuffed, he was made in Korea (not China), and he is not weighted with beans! Beanie Babies were not introduced until 1993 - -the next year. It is difficult to fathom now, but two years later, in 1995, the internet was still in its infancy and only 1.4% of Americans were regular users. In spite of that Warner had the foresight to imagine the possibilities, and his Ty Company because the very first to create a direct-to-consumer website! I share that bit of background because Otto was released just before the Ty brand exploded, and he remains a precursor to the wild ride of Ty mania that followed! Otto measures approx. 10" from the top of his head to his tush, not including his tail, which measures about 6" in length. His tush tag sports the skinny "ty" and confirms that he was made in Korea. He holds a plush shell in his paws, and he's as cute as can be!
