Hermaphroditus is a compound of his parents Hermes and Aphrodite. Sculpted in 1844, originally it was exhibited in Westminster Hall as a competition entry for the decoration of the new Houses of Parliament, though unsuccessful, it did feature at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Eventually it was acquired by an art dealer named Mr Alfred Bullard, his brother Willie Porter Bullard had been Mayor of Stratford and he presented it to the Stratford Corporation in 1932.
