Description: This is a PDF scan of a diary from 1868, not a physical item! This diary was written by Eliza Sparrow of Camden, N.Y. Eliza was born April 26, 1827 and died December 18, 1914. She was about 40 years old when she wrote this diary. I managed to win a good number of Eliza's diaries last year in an attempt to keep them all together, and this is the earliest one I have. I started something I call The Lost Diary Project (http://www.thelostdiaryproject.com), where I "rescue," read, research, preserve and attempt to return the diaries to their families. One success story so far! I'm hoping someone who has some of her other diaries might see this listing and reach out. I would gladly send PDFs to anyone who might let me purchase the missing diaries. Whenever I do hopefully find her descendants, I would love to have as many of her diaries as possible to offer. With this purchase, you will get a PDF scan of the diary, plus my best attempt at transcribing what she wrote. Her handwriting can get pretty tiny, and some words I still can't decipher. On my way home from Mrs Thompsons/Aunt Anns/ it is so cold my pencil trembles in my hand.I very much fear Mrs. T. will never get up again. I called in Mrs Lannings both going and coming.I found it very muddy going in crossing the “hog lot.” Had been home but a short time when Mattis Thompson and Mattis Lanning came in.They had come for some drink and ____ for Mrs Thompson. I gave them about half we had. Jony boiled sap today. Tues, April 14six weeks tomorrowWe expected the Cases here to spend the day but they did not come.Jane Gilchrist came with her pair of men carrying morning's milk enough to fill a small pan. In a little while after she left, Maggie came and laughingly told us “the rest was coming.” She wanted my receipt for cookies.Ma and I ironed some. Sat, May 2Rainy and Jony has been scalding this __ in the ___ ___ of pork. I've made raised biscuit, a spice cake, one mince pie, one elder berry and one spitzerburg apple pie which finishes that kind of apple.A young called and fixed our clock. Jane Gilchrist came over bringing the “Oneida Democrat” for us to read on account of a most shocking murder of a little girl eight years old four miles east of Camden at a place called Pond Hill a ___ age today. Fri, June 5Ma and I washed the husks in her under bed. Heat the water out door put it on scalding hot and then put them on the grass. It took a great amount of water. Jony filled the large iron kettle the first time and I think I filled it four or five times afterward.While we were getting toward the last of it, Mrs Patton called. She went immediately into the sitting room and made a long call. She was going down to Mrs Hatchs. She stopped at the gate and talked when she went back. Sat, Sept 26Edward left this morning on the 9 o'clock train.In the afternoon, Jony and I went to Oneida taking Sanford with us to have his overcoat fitted. The rain prevented his going yesterday. Jony mailed a letter to Sammie, relating to hops and a sample of hops.We came home from Oneida by noon. Baked bread and rinsed and hung out a large washing before going away.It is the first day for a long time that clothes could possibly dry. Tues, Oct 27Bright lovely day. Ma gave me a $1.00 bill from the Office, sent to buy me material for a white apron. I had 3/4 of a yard of Brilliant at 5/- per yard and 2 3/8 yard of Marsailes trimming at 10 cents per yard. Miranda came after dinner dressed in black silk and Mr B___ and Mary. Mr ___ took Miranda home after dark and it rained. She invited us there to tea tomorrow. In the evening, A and I cut out our new white aprons.I wanted to go up to L___'s today but did not get away. Ma seems better than she was when we came.
