Description: This pair of antique Chinese watercolor paintings is from the later part of the Quing Dynasty (1850-1899) or early 19th century. Both paintings were rolled and stored for many years. They were recently purchased from a San Francisco, CA auction. Each painting was created using watercolor and ink on silk and mounted on thin cardstock with a damask border. The reason these particular paintings are from the Quing Dynasty, or early 19th century is the fading of the chop marks, and the aging of the silk and damask border. Each painting has the same seals or chops marks appearing in the same place on the painting. A large round red seal with four red Chinese symbols are in the upper right of each painting. In the upper left of the painting most likely is the title of the painting and a chop mark. In the lower left of each painting are two red seal marks that probably indicate the artist chop marks or reign marks. Painting Details: Rider #1 - On White Horse: A Chinese man wearing a red overcoat, yellow pants, brown boots, and a brown hat is riding a white and black horse. He is carrying a whip in his left hand. The horse colors appear to be white, off white, light brown, with black fur on his legs, black hoofs, black flowing mane, and black tail. The horse's mighty head is very detailed. The rider is seated on a large brown, blue, teal, and yellow bridle with red riding ropes. The horse is prancing. There are several bends in the picture due to the way it was rolled and stored. This painting with damask border measures approximately 16 in X 13 in or 40.64 cm X 33.02 cm. Rider # 2 - On Brown Horse A Chinese man wearing a green overcoat, brown and beige pants, brown boots, and a blue hat is riding a brown horse. He is holding the bridle rope in his left hand.
