This handmade piece is perfect for any art collector or enthusiast who appreciates the beauty and uniqueness of watercolor paintings by an outsider, down syndrome artist. Marc de Bruijn (1974-2008) lived in a facility for people with intellectual disabilities and worked as an artist in a studio from 1996. Marc had Down syndrome and was quite autistic. He mainly drew and painted animals. The inspiration for his work came from Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam, which he visited weekly with his father, until September 2006. Another source of inspiration was the Gouden Leeuw in Voorschoten, where he ate weekly with his father. There is a kind of bird park here. Marc drew "The Golden Lion" almost every day. He was very fond of these outings. Marc was likewise fond of animal books. One would assume that he would also want to have physical contact with animals. But nothing was further from the truth. He panicked. Dogs and cats he preferred to avoid. Everything safely behind a fence or wire mesh was what Marc liked.Marc worked mostly in a dressmaker's chair, like the Japanese and Chinese artists. Beforehand, he very compulsively collected all the inkwells and other materials he needed. If anything was missing, he was unable to make any work. Compulsively this process/ritual took place daily. When he finally had everything, it seemed as if he fell into a kind of trance. With a fulfilled, serene smile, he created his wondrous world on canvas or paper with rakish strokes, strokes and delicate touches. Afterwards, he filled in his works with acrylic inks or other paints. One of his favorite subjects was the Peanut Butter Bunny: a little man with a beard and a tail who once gave him permission to spread nice thick peanut butter on bread. Peanut butter was his favorite cheese. And as an ode to the benefactor, he drew and painted the Peanut Butter Bunny in all shapes, sizes, forms and materials. The Peanut Butter Bunny also often has two suitcases in his hands, because the Peanut Butter Bunny travels a lot. Marc's work is collected worldwide and enjoys legitimate interest from collectors. Works by him hang in law offices, several government ministries and practices of renowned New York psychiatrists. Notable guests at openings of exhibitions of Marc's work have included Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons) and Icelandic singer Björk.It is therefore with pride that SPeerpunt de Kunst ß will open an exhibition of his work on December 21 in the presence of Marc's mother. A short film will be shown and background music will be provided by Antony.
