Description: This is an original hand forged tomahawk made 1767-83 for use by the British Royal Navy and military in colonial America. Small axes like this were carried by 18th century colonial American farmers, militia, trappers, and Native Americans as tools and weapons. In the 1750's, newly formed British Light Infantry units in colonial America were issued belt axes, carried below the bayonet scabbard on cross belts, replacing a sword, or in their packs. American patriots carried them, having discovered their usefulness for fighting in wilderness areas during the French and Indian (Seven Years 1756-63) and Revolutionary Wars (1775-83). Spike tomahawks were issued to British military and sailors in the colonial New York and Virginia areas before and during the Revolution. Kept on board sailing ships as boarding weapons and used to cut away burning rigging during naval battles. Most I've seen like this came from the colonial New York and Virginia areas and they were made and/or sold by local foundries. Photo #7 shows a similar, smaller spike tomahawk made in Frederick County, Virginia by the Zane Iron Works (founded 1767). It belonged to a Queen's Loyalist Ranger. Not for sale, reference only. This larger version was also likely made by Zane judging by design and form. Original hand carved handle is 14 1/8" long and retains original brown stain or paint. Hammer forged head is 5 1/2" long. In unissued condition and 100 percent original, it was preserved in grease which has been removed. A few paint chips from storage. Please study the photos carefully for visible condition. A beautiful preserved colonial American weapon, it has been on my mantle for many years. I only have this one for sale. I will provide a signed Letter of Authenticity with purchase.
