Post. overprint in black on 1931 watermarked 15c airmail stamp, engraved and printed by Perkins Bacon & Company of London, England under contract from John Dickinson and Company. Brown, Coat of Arms watermark - position 4 (see scans), perf 14.1x14.1 (there are 3 reported perforation varieties - see below). Printed on relatively thin but stiff white wove paper with vertical mesh, whitish (almost colorless) gum. Mint, never-hinged original gum. Sound, fault-free example of this iconic Newfoundland stamp. This stamp is listed as 194 in the 2023 edition of the Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue with a value of $195.00 US for a stamp in mint, never-hinged condition. An order in council increased the cost of mailing a registered letter for most out-of-country mail to 15c in 1932. This led to a shortage of the 15c "Seal Pup" definitive (UT 195) stamp and the government decided to overprint 70,000 of the current 15c air mail stamp (UT C9), in blocks of 25, with "L. & S. Post." converting them to use for "Land and Sea" . This was done by the printing company of D.R. Thistle of St. John's on February 9, 1933. The watermarked 15c airmail stamp used for the overprints are known to have been produced with 7 different perforation types but only 3 have been reported to date on the overprinted stamps, the most common being perf 13.8x13.8 followed by perf 14.3x14.1 and perf 14.1x14.1 being the scarcest of the 3 types. "L. & S. Post." in black reading downward was used for the overprint along with 2 parallel black bars on each side of the stamp which were meant to obliterate the AIR MAIL designation of the stamp. A number of interesting varieties are known, some that are extremely scarce including stamps with an inverted overprint (25 known), pairs with and without the overprint (15 known), stamps with doubled printed overprints, badly shifted overprints, overprints on the gum side, and a sheet of 25 with the top 2 horizontal rows lacking the overprint. As with the airmail stamps used for the overprints, stamps are found with inverted watermarks, pairs with and without watermarks, and pairs with and without cross shaped watermarks. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot.
