C., 1909 - Cross River, New York, 1993) Date: 1946 Medium: Original Lithograph Printed in Color Note: Lawrence Beall Smith: A premier American painter, sculptor, lithographer and illustrator of the twentieth century, Lawrence Beall Smith studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Chicago (PhB., 1931) as well as under Harold Zimmerman and Charles Hopkinson, in Boston. Lawrence Beall-Smith began exhibiting his art in 1935 and gained a strong national reputation by 1941 when a one-man exhibition of his art was launched at the Whitney Museum in New York. Throughout the following years, Smith's art figured prominently in most major exhibitions, including those of the prestigious National Academy. Besides his paintings and sculptures in stone, Lawrence Beall Smith was also a highly gifted lithographic artist and illustrator. In this latter category, he illustrated such fine books as Robin Hood (1952), Wasington Square, (1971), Best in Chirldren's Books, Volume 42, (1961), The History of Tom Jones; A Foundling (1964), Oliver Twist (1956), andother well-known books. Today examples of his original lithographs, paintings and sculpture are included in the permanent collections of such major galleries as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, the University of Chicago, and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Museum Visitor owes its genesis to a small black and white lithograph Smith completed in 1940 for the Associated American Artists of New York. It proved so popular that Smith again attempted a variation upon the original image, this time greatly expanding its size and adding various shades of greens. The end result is this truly enchanting lithograph, published in New York in 1946. It is believed the edition size was two hundred and fifty.
