Description: Modernist Michael Cohen Stoneware Studio Pottery Mirror Coat Hook Wall HangingOffering a wonderful 1960s geometric design stoneware mirror and coat hook by Massachusetts studio potter Michael Cohen. Executed at Herring Run while sharing a studio with William Wyman, this piece is signed with the Cohen mark. It measures 20" tall x 5 1/2" wide x 5" deep and consists of a tall narrow mirror above a recessed coin and keys receptacle, above a single coat hook. It weighs a hefty 6lbs. on its own. Wonderful both in its simplicity and multiplicity of purpose. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks or signs of damage or repair. Some stains on the mirror give it character. It has Michael Cohen's studio mark in the lower right corner as well as on the back, along with Michael Cohen Stoneware written in pencil on back. Michael Cohen received his B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art of Boston. While studying there Michael accepted a position as an employee of William Wyman. After serving in the military, he completed graduate work at the Cranbrook Academy, where he was a student of Maija Grotell. After one year at Cranbrook, he started his own studio in Newton Center, MA. In 1963, Michael Cohen and William Wyman created the Herring Run Pottery of East Weymouth, MA. His work is in the permanent collections of the Fuller Art Museum, Brockton, MA; Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY; Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York, NY; and the Museum of Modern Art, Design Collection, New York, NY.
