The trading city of Riga was founded in 1201 by Germans and later in the century was incorporated into the Hanseatic League, a trading network of ports that included Gdansk (in modern day Poland), Swedish capital Stockholm, and Hamburg, Bremen, LÜbeck and Rostock in Germany itself. Trade helped Riga and the wider region develop and brought some wealth to the Baltics. At the same time, the minority German population occupied positions of power as well as local nobility. During the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and beyond, Latvia was occupied by a range of the eras larger powers. Latvia was a province of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and then Sweden as a result of war. Nevertheless, by the start of the 18th century, Latvia was seemingly entrenched into the Baltic political and trading sphere, as well as North Europe more generally.
