Description: A fine mid-century original watercolor from American abstract painter and illustrator Robert Andrew Parker (1927-2023). It is signed in the lower left and dated 1957. Nice sized piece, the image measures 27 1/4 x 18 inches. The paper has mildly toned with age, shows minor foxing on the reverse, otherwise excellent condition. Included is the original exhibition label from the St. Paul Gallery, the work is titled "Lourdes" and is similar to a Parker work from 1955 that is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum: https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollection/objects/74803 Parker's work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others. He has taught at the Gerit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design, Syracuse University, and the School of Visual Arts, New York. Robert Andrew Parker (1927-2023) Parker attended the school of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1948 until 1952 and worked during the following months at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and at Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in New York. Since his first solo show in 1954, Parker has exhibited extensively, and his credits include set designs for opera and film as well as book illustrations. In his watercolors Parker combines areas of pure color with design conceived in terms of silhouette and shape. He takes his subject matter mostly from the natural world — dogs, trees, mountains, people, birds — and condenses and simplifies imagery with a swift, expressionistic technique. During his career Parker has worked in such distinctive locales as Arles and Saint-Remy in France and the Himalayas, where a 1981 walking tour provided the subjects for a series on landscapes and fellow trekkers. source: Virginia M.
