PURVIS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER TRIPLE SIGNED 08/19/1944 - HFSID 168599 MELVIN H. PURVIS Melvin Purvis, the man who hunted down John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd, shows his soft side in this tender letter to his wife, written while he was an Army colonel in 1944. Autograph letter signed "Melvin" in closing and "Melvin Purvis" and "Colonel Melvin Purvis" with his military serial number in return address. 1 page, 8x10½, ruled paper. Addressed from an Army Post Office in New York City, Aug. 19, 1944. In full: "Dear Roseanne, (no. 363) This will be a note to enclose a copy of a letter [not enclosed] I sent to Mr. Want in response to a letter from him I am sending it because he sent you a copy of his letter to me. Mr. Want is mighty kind. I wrote you a V mail letter today. Did Melvin want the crop with the sword in it? It is dangerous but you might let him show it to his friends when Philip is there to closely supervise the exhibition. But it must be done carefully. I am glad you like the things that arrived in lot number nine. The other of the pair of candlesticks is just like it. Both are very valuable. The tray was espial especially made in Cairo. The other boxes are very slow in getting there. I am so glad you are all right. I have been so worried I don't know what to do. I love you. Tell Melvin I'll write him again soon. Tell them I love them and want to see the so bad. I wish you knew how I want to see you. I miss you every moment. I hope I can soon. I live for that day only. I adore you." "Roseanne" is probably his wife Marie Rosanne Willcox Purvis, whom he married on 1931, while "Melvin" is probably his son Melvin Horace Purvis III (1940-1986). Purvis was a colonel in the U. S. Army during World War II. Purvis (1903-1960) became a national hero after leading the law-enforcement teams that trapped and killed notorious bank robbers John Dillinger and Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd in 1934. By 1935, however, Purvis had been forced to resign as the head of the Bureau's Chicago office by J. Edgar Hoover. As the Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death, the powerful and egotistic Hoover, resentful because Purvis received the bulk of the publicity in the Dillinger and Floyd episodes, relieved his one-time "golden boy" of most of his important duties. "Little Mel" (he stood just under five feet tall) was effectively driven out of the Bureau at the age of 31. Lightly toned and creased. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. See more material from these signers: MELVIN H. PURVIS See more listings in our LAW & ORDER (329) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
