Description: This was a gift from my great grand aunt, who lived in “old” Riverside, CA back in the day, and would have traveled to Japan on more than one occasion. While I am not an expert on Japanese antiquities, I have been a strong collector of all antiques for the past 40 years, with an undergraduate degree in history with a supplement in Asian studies. A similar item offered on Ebay at $450.00 describes the item as being from the Meiji restoration period, beginning 1868 and ending 1912. However, it might be from the earlier Edo period which ended in 1867, per a description of a similar $350.00 item on the Sotheby’s website. Sotheby’s describes these items as Heikegani crabs. Under either interpretation, the item for sale is Japanese, original, antique and rare. Moreover, this piece is signed, per the photograph on the underside of the neck/collar of the item, showing the old Japanese block lettering. Unfortunately, I am not able to decipher the lettering. The dimensions are shown on the photographs at 5 1/8” by 2 5/8”, with a weight of 168 grams (5.9 oz.) per my scale at home. I am offering a lower sales price not because I question the provenance, but because I need to downsize sooner than later. If you have any questions whatsoever, just let me know. Many thanks and best regards. H. Tucker Dewey in Memphis, TN, currently a grandpa and retired attorney.
