LIVE EDGE - SPALTED AMBROSIA ASH - "THE SPALTED CROSS"

Description: Born from an unwanted slab of the softest Ambrosia Spalted Ash, deep in the heart of the woods in the central mid-west... we bring you - "THE SPALTED CROSS" w/ LIVE Edge Grown and harvested locally, this slab was around 6' in length when we first laid eyes on it... The local saw mill had this laying up against the side of a barn to be burnt due to the SOFT nature of the wood as it wouldn't be much use for furniture making... but as we walked past it, I couldn't take my eyes off of the grain coloring and the unique nature of the patterns and colors and decided we HAD to have it. When I asked about it, I was told "You don't want that one, it can't be worked."I said I disagreed, challenge accepted, and instantly I fell in love with it. We brought this slab home and let it acclimate for 6 months, waiting for the perfect idea to hit us, and then it did. The Spalted Cross. There were NO electric tools used in the making of this except for a flush trim router bit in order to round out the inside corners of the cross, and even that was done free hand. The wood was so soft I was scared to use to use anything else because I wanted perfection. Everything was hand cut, hand sanded, hand polished, and then finished by hand with "Odies Oil."The process began with sand paper and a chisel. I worked the wood while it was soft thinking it would be much easier to cut out the cross that way using a coping saw blade, and I was beyond wrong. This ended up being one of the hardest projects I've done to date... However - it also turned out to be one of the most beautiful. Because the wood was so soft in certain areas, it chipped in some spots on the back side, nothing noticeable, and I couldn't get a smooth finish like I wanted inside the cutouts of the cross - as the fibers were very quick to separate and fray causing some minor pitting in the wood. BUT - We got it done. Once the cross was cut out, sanded, and rounded over from the inside out, we went thru a 3 day hardening process to eliminate the possibility of it ever breaking or chipping using "DAP Plastic Wood - Wood Hardener" 3 coats - 3 days.It is now as solid as Maple. Once the wood was hardened we began the sanding process. Sanded from 120 all the way up to 800 grain, this left a smooth glass like texture over the entirety of the board. At that point we applied 2 coats of "Odies Oil" wood polish, and attached the hardware to the back side. All in all - this is one of the MOST beautiful pieces of wood I have EVER laid my eyes on. The spalted coloring, the ambrosia markings, and the little worm holes in some spots make this one of the most unique pieces of wall decor I have ever had the pleasure of making. Once you look into the grain, you will get lost in the beauty of it. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND, and there will NEVER be another. Measurements - Height - 16" Width - 16" from tip to edge at the top, and 12" from edge to edge at the bottom. Thickness - .75" We strive for perfection in every project.
