KING LOUIS PHILIPPE (FRANCE) - PROCLAMATION SIGNED 11/15/1839 - HFSID 23653 KING LOUIS PHILIPPE The French King writes a letter informing a cabinet member of the opening Session of the Chambers, framed to an overall size of 32x24 Manuscript Letter Signed: "Louis Philippe" in French as King of France, 1p, 8x9. Tuileries, 1839 November 15. In full: "We inform you that the opening of the Session of the Chambers will be in Paris, the monday 23 December next, and that you must attend. Your affectionate" In November 1839, King Louis Philippe signed this missive to a cabinet member for the opening of Chambers, the French Legislature, which Louis based upon the governments of nations he had visited in his youth including post-Revolutionary United States. This particular session took place at the height of Louis Philippe's struggle to establish France's position as an allied power in Europe which would work with other nations - not overthrow them. In 1840, the King would establish a special peace cabinet to carry out his plans for a peaceful, allied Europe. Known as the "Citizen King" for his menial habits and public visibility. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) was a direct descendant of Philippe d'Orleans (1640-1701), the youngest son of King Louis XIII (1601-1643). Bering far removed from the crown; he was raised more harshly than a well-to-do commoner. Louis was 57 years old when liberals and political allies opposed to King Charles X (1757-1836) brought him to power as a revolutionary monarch through a political coup due to public opposition of Charles. Once named King, however, he chose a middle course between the monarchists and the Bonapartists. In spite of his attempt at a more democratic nation, numerous rebellions and attempted assassinations caused Louis Philippe to become more guarded of his person and strict with the people. These reactions were necessary due to factors beyond his control - blights of drought and disease in the 1840s led to famine and economic hardships for which the French reverted to old ways and blamed the nobleman and monarchy. A new age of revolutionaries evolved and challenged the crown. Louis Philippe believed in the democratic doctrine; therefore, in 1848, he chose to abdicate. Still, he was forced to flee to England for sanctuary, where he lived for the remainder of his life. This announcement was co-signed by Louis-Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), who helped establish Louis Philippe's reign. He served as Minister of Interior (1832, 1834-1836), Minister of Public Works (1833-1834), and Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1836, 1840). Thiers would be instrumental in the Franco-Prussian War treaty (1871) and become President of the Third Republic (1871-1873). Slightly soiled. Fold creases. Fine condition.
