Description: JOHN W. CLARKE VTG SIGNED ORIG PASTEL PAINTING LANDSCAPE W/ COWS John W. Clarke (1862-1940) was born in London, England, the son of a Shakespearean actor and his artist wife. The family soon moved to Canada where Clarke spent his youth. At the age of 19, he settled in Toledo, Ohio, and worked as a locomotive engineer until about 1894 when he began to paint professionally. Clarke often painted landscapes along the shores of Lake Erie at Lakeside, Walbridge Park and Marblehead, Ohio. He was also known for his many flower studies. In addition, he was proficient in the use of pastel, developing a technique, which he never disclosed, for protecting the surface and achieving a precision in detail not ordinarily seen in this medium. Despite failing eyesight, the artist remained active in Toledo until two weeks before his death in 1940. The original pastel painting on board offered here is a lovely example of Clarke’s work and depicts a lush summer landscape with sycamore trees along a slow-moving stream. Three cows can be seen grazing in the distance. The pastel is signed in the lower right and is matted and framed under glass in a beveled giltwood frame. The visible image measures 6.25” x 8.25” and the overall framed dimensions measure 9.5” x 11.5”. While there are some scuffs and scrapes on the frame, the pastel itself is in excellent original condition, with no evidence of smudging, toning, foxing, or fading. This is an absolutely beautiful example of Clarke’s work that would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
