About the strip: Now over 100 years old, Barney Google & Snuffy Smith first appeared in newspapers on June 17, 1919. Created by cartoonist Billy DeBeck, the strip has attained a huge international readership, appearing in 900 newspapers in 21 countries. It has been adapted to film, animation, popular song and television. It has even added several terms and phrases to the English language and also inspired the 1923 hit tune "Barney Google (with the Goo-Goo-Googly Eyes)" as well as the 1923 record, "Come On, Spark Plug!" After DeBeck's death in 1942, the strip was taken over by his lifelong assistant, Fred Lasswell. After his death in 2001, assistant and inker John R. Rose took over the strip and has illustrated it ever since.
