Description: GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a quality vintage hardback FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION entitled “Sense & Sensibility,” by Jane Austen, with an Introduction by Richard Church, illustrated with numerous woodcut illustrations by Joan Hassall, including a frontispiece and with illustrated endpapers. It was published by The Folio Society, of London, in 1964 and is the third impression of the 1958 FIRST FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION. Sense and Sensibility was the first novel Jane Austen published. She initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who both experience the excitement and brutal disappointment of love – but who react to their grief in different ways. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is, in contrast, wildly romantic. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist and one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature. From 1811 until 1815, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published after her death in 1817, and began a third, which was eventually entitled Sanditon, but died before completing it. The book measures 9 inches x 5.8 inches and has 285 pages (including illustrations). The book is in good, clean and neat condition, with a little wear/fading to the cloth spine. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. There is no slipcase. A wonderful, illustrated quality vintage FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION.
