Description: The Hundredth Archbishop of Canterbury By James B. Simpson (1926-2002) Harper & Row, PublishersNew York and Evanston, Indiana October 1962 Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For Persis Barlow with best wishes James B. Simpson, Nashotah House Feast of St Augustine, 26 May 1966 From Jane & Earl Abbott 66" Inscribed on the half-title page: "+ Michael Ramsey, 31 March 1976 - with my [?] blessing -" At this time, Ramsey was no longer Archbishop of Canterbury although a life peer, so signed with his normal surname (while sill signing with a cross at the beginning) rather than Michael Cantuar (see frontispiece photo with his signature as Archbishop, which is an abbreviation of the Latin term Cantuariensis, meaning Canterbury). He spent several terms after his retirement at Nashotah House, an Anglo-Catholic seminary of the Episcopal Church in Wisconsin where he was believed to be very popular with students. Small pastedown at top of clipped dust jacket of Persis J. Barlow of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada x, 262 p.: Frontispiece and 16 unpaginated pages, containing 24 illustrations; 21.5 cm. (8.5 inches). Black cloth, with gilt-stamped spine title and blind-stamped front-cover Archbishop's staff. Glossy price-clipped illustrated color dust jacket, with front-cover black and white photograph of Archbishop Michael Cantuar in vestments and back-cover candid black and white photograph of the Most Rev. Michael Ramsey, taken an hour after his enthronement. Includes List of the Archbishops of Canterbury From the Consecration of St. Augustine from 597 A.D. to 1961, and Index. Black and white illustrated endpapers, with front endpapers featuring Lambeth Palace, London, and the back endpapers featuring Canterbury Cathedral. Deckled fore-edges. First Edition "A vivid biography of Arthur Michael Ramsey, - head of the worldwide Anglican Communion - an authoritative portrait of the man and his ideas against the background of family, friends, colleagues, and places of importance in his life and work" [from the front of the dust jacket]. Book is in Very Good Plus Condition: As noted, inscriptions on the front free endpaper and the half-title page; otherwise, the pages and photographs are bright, clean, tight and unmarked. Dust Jacket is in Fair Condition: former owner, to prevent further wear along the top and bottom edges ran tape neatly along them but quite obvious, particularly on the inside of the dust jacket, but did enable both the photos on the front and back sections to remain intact. Also, as noted, price-clipped and with small pastedown by the original owner at the top of the clipped front flap. Extremely Scarce double-inscribed copy.
