In Ancient Rome, there was no doubt about the miraculous power of thermal waters, and on the conquered lands, the Romans built baths near each such source. The largest baths built outside Rome were the magnificent baths in a small valley at the foot of the Golan Heights on the banks of the Yarmouk River near the ancient Gadara mentioned in the Bible. The complex was built in the 2nd century AD. by the forces of the 10th Roman Legion, in order to heal the old wounds of the soldiers, as well as for general use. We called it the Three Graces, whose statues were installed in niches. The hydrogen sulfide water of the Ein Makla hot spring, with temperatures reaching 52C° (125.6 °F) in summer and slightly lower in winter, was considered healing. The Romans tried to cure a variety of diseases here, including mental illness and even the absence of limbs, as can be seen from the unique atlas of diseases depicted on the sculptures found here. Entrance to the baths was free, however, everyone who came had to donate something to a good cause.
