George Washington Inaugural Centennial Official Medallion 1889 Baxter 77, Douglas 53, Marqusee 346 112.7mm (4 7/16"). Gilt Bronze Shells (Obverse & Reverse), with a golden-brown patina. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) and modeled by Philip Martiny (1858-1927). About Uncirculated, with scattered spots of gilt loss/high point rubs Obverse Shell: with half-length bust of Washington in civil dress to the left, fasces to right. Curved over bust GEORGE WASHINGTON at the center is a two line inscription divided by bust and fasces: PATER/PAT-RIAE/M D C C L/XX-XIX. In two lines below bust: PHILLIP MARTINY MODELER DESIGN AND/ COPYWRIGHT BY AVGVSTVS SAINT GAVDENS. Around the border, thirteen stars evenly spaced. Reverse shell: A Federal eagle with spread wings, shield with raised E/PLVRIBVS/VNVM appears near the top, with a twelve line inscription below identifies the cause of celebration. TO COMMEMORATE/ THE INAVGERATION/ OF GEORGE WASWHINGTON/ AS FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE/ VNITED STATE OF AMERICA/ AT NEW YORK APRIL XXY/ M D C C C LXXIX/ BY AVTHVROITY OF/THE COMMITTEE/ON CELEBRATION/ NEW YORK APRIL/XXX/MDCCCLXXIX Thirty eight stars evenly spaced around the border with city of New York arms/shield to lower left of line 7 thru 11. It was written that Barbara Baxter considered this as St Gaudens most influencial medallic work. I feel this description will be most helpful the the purchaser of this fine piece.
