GENE TUNNEY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/10/1941 - HFSID 82308 GENE TUNNEY The former World Heavyweight Champion writes regarding the success of a book, probably his second autobiography, while serving as Director of Athletics and Fitness for the U.S. Navy less than two months before the U.S. entered WWII. TLS: "Gene", 1p, 7¾x10½. St. Louis, Missouri, 1941 October 10. On letterhead of U.S. Navy Recruiting Station to Mr. G. Lyn Sumner, New York, New York. Begins: "Dear Lynn". In full: "Many thanks for your nice note of the 3rd. I do hope that your predictions about the book will materialize. Looking forward to seeing you soon, I am Sincerely". In 1941, Tunney published his second autobiography, Arms for Living, which discussed his family, military and boxing careers and offered advice on such topics as perserverance to military personnel. He had published his first autobiography, A Man Must Fight, in 1932. Tunney, a veteran of WWI, was Director of Athletics and Fitness for the U.S. Navy during WWII, which the U.S. entered after Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, just two months after this letter. James Joseph "Gene" Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926). He then won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), before picking up one more easy purse and then retiring (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. His son, John, was a U.S. Senator from California (1971-1977). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature.
