Description: Outstanding French Pre Revolutionary War Artillery ( 29" blade) Sword. Pre Revolutionary War, Pre 1789. It has the word "Roi" (King) on it, which was later scratched off during the revolution ( see red arrow ). Perhaps only dozens of French pre revolutionary swords survive today but not many of them are so elaborately decorated like this one. You can see an identical sword on pages 265-266 of Jean Lhotse book "LES SABRES PORTES PAR L'ARMEE FRANCAISE" ( French Army Swords) which of course is a bible of all French swords collectors. "Vivre libre ou mourir" and "La Nation, la Loi, le Roi" , on the blade. A similar artillery sword undoubtedly belonged to a 20-year-old second-lieutenant of the La Fère artillery regiment serving in the Auxonne region of France at the outbreak of the Revolution of 1789 named Napoleon Bonaparte. The moveable guard lock works fine, nice and tight. No parts wiggling, rust on the blades. 34 1/2" total, 28 1/2 " blade, 1 3/4" at the ricasso.
