Description: Evening Primrose Oenothera biennisYou are buying a packet of seeds as pictured. I don't know how many because they are too small. There are hundreds in the baggie.I will mail these regular mail in order to keep cost down. Year before last, this was the little rosette that is described. Nothing much to look at but it just got bigger and bigger around. Then, last spring, it started to grow, and grow and grow. It ended up being 5 feet tall and about the same around. It was HUGE and covered with the most lovely yellow flowers from bottom to top. The pictures were taken at different stages of growth.I have dozens of these all over the garden and have been killing them left and right. If you want to buy a plant or two, contact me and I will list them. Oenothera biennis is the most widely distributed species of Oenothera in the U.S. The roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds of evening primrose are all edible. The flowers are mostly decorative, with a mild, sweet flavor. Think salad or garnish. The leaves are ok, but nothing to write home about. They can fill out a stir-fry or fritatta. The flower stalks can be peeled and eaten raw or cooked, before the flowers open. The seeds of evening primrose are edible, and some people appreciate their medicinal properties. First year growth of evening primrose is a basal rosette of foliage. It’s often found in large colonies, in full sun .It’s asiest to spot in summer when the flower stalks stand one – six feet tall.Leaves are lance-shaped, two – seven inches long, with a prominent white midrib. They may be toothed or have wavy margins.Second year growth includes a hairy stem that produces large, four-petalled, yellow flowers, approximately two inches in diameter.Foliage along the flower stalk is arranged alternately. The tall, dried stalks of evening primrose often remain standing over winter. Use them to locate first year rosettes. Thank you backyardforager for the info.
