FAIR to GOOD, with pages well bound. Henry Gamadge is an author, bibliophile, and forgery expert, in New York City. But somehow he got involved with detective work, which brings some excitement. And his wife, Clara Dawson, occasionally helps. About the Author:Elizabeth Daly (1878-1967) published her first mystery novel at the age of sixty-two, then went on to write fifteen more mysteries in a charming series set in 1940s New York, in a style reminiscent of the British Golden Age: They feature a gentleman sleuth who is a rare books expert and handwriting specialist and who solves crimes in his free time. Among her fans was Agatha Christie, who was noted to have declared Daly her favorite American author. As well as satisfying classic mysteries, Daly's novels serve as astute depictions of New York society at the time, a world on the point of vanishing. She received an Edgar award in 1960 for her body of work. Commentaries on line: (#7)I enjoyed this story very much; it was a nice comfortable mystery with a new character for me, that being Henry Gamadge, a New York sleuth who also happens to write mysteries. I liked the characters, including his cast of friends. I hope in future books, as I do know I'll read more of Elizabeth Daly's mysteries, that they are developed further. (#7)I'm reading the Henry Gamadge books in order, and I have enjoyed all of them so far, but this one was a cut above. Unfortunately, I don't see myself rereading this for a long time-it is too memorable. (#8)Well, this one seemed to start out a little gloomy, but the interest sure picked up the more the plot went on—because aside from the straightforward murder of Somebody Who Knew Something, you're not even certain what crime has been committed or why the perpetrators are so desperately trying to keep it secret! Elizabeth Daly really has a gift for inventing unique plots. (#8)There were a solid number of twists and turns. I like the associates that Gamadge has and uses to help him solve this mystery. The reveal of who was involved with the deaths was a good surprise and justified (and explained) well. (#9)I loved this book. This mystery is set in 1945 out in the country, but not too far from New York City. This book was written in 1945. The style of this book is not swashbuckling, but instead rather quiet, intelligent, and suspenseful. Not boring... you constantly have the feeling that something very bad will happen. (#9)I liked this very much, the time period, the country house and gardens setting, the diverse characters. Gamage figures it out early on, and in plain sight of the reader, too. Did I get the clues? Absolutely not. (#10)Compared to many modern mystery writers, the prose is distinguished and the wonderful descriptive passages give a good sense of period and place. I also like that Daly does not make her policemen dull-witted foils to her detective. (#10)Daly was Agatha Christie's favorite American author. "Somewhere in the House" may provide the reader with some clues as to why that should be so. It's well-plotted and beautifully written; Daly was an expert at creating memorable characters and wrote with a dry, understated kind of humor. The plot is macabre, the misdirection is first-rate, and the reader will be delighted and surprised by the story's twists and turns. (#11)It's a quirky tale, moving through a maze of plots and red herrings including a wild car chase from one rough neighborhood to another. I must say I was thrown for a loop at the end and wasn't prepared to face the true identity of the killer. (#11)Daly was really hitting her stride by the time she penned The Wrong Way Down. Gamadge has more personality than in the early books, and his assistant Harold is an enjoyable addition to the set characters. I also very much enjoy Nordhall, Gamadge's friend on the police force. The murderer was never among my suspects as I read the book, but I'm getting used to Daly's unexpected twists. _____________________Modern shipping charges keep going higher and higher.
