Description: Rare vintage hardcover of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "Hitherto Unpublished Poems and Stories with an unedited Autobiography". This is book #431 of the 453 copies of Vol.1 exclusively printed for members of Boston's Bibliophile Society. The owner of the manuscripts, Mr. Harper loaned them to the Society for publication. H.Buxton Forman, also a collector of Browning's works, spent 2 years editing and compiling the work as we see it today. With an introduction by Forman, and an autobiography by Browning(as a14 year old), the piece begins with " Early Verse and Prose from the Hope End Archives". The book has been well appreciated by members of the same family for over a century. The brown hardcover has gilt double lines bordering the covers, and the spine has gilt lettering and stamp of the Bibliophile Society. The covers have spots and wear, as do the corners and edges of spine. The binding is very solid though. The inside covers and first pages have some staining, spots, and aging. The plate of Barrett as a girl is excellent with original protective tissue. The opposite insignia title page has yellowing of the border. The rough cut pages are often uneven, and some are uncut(see photos). The gilt on the top of the exterior top pages is still vibrant. There is much aging and spotting on many pages, along with several smudges. None of this affects the text though. The thick paper has no apparent rips or dog ears. A very well cared for book that is solid and readable today. Hard to find this rare edition in such good shape. Unique edition is perfect for a collector!
