Eduard Holst (1843 – 4 February 1899) was a Danish playwright, composer, actor, dancer, and dance master. His name is spelled sometimes Edward Holst or Edvard Holst. Holst was born in Copenhagen. His compositions include songs and piano solo works. He was very prolific and a 1907 biography states he produced over two thousand works. He died in New York City. A gavotte is a piece of music that has the rhythm of a French dance of the same name, which is a courtly dance for couples and groups of people. The gavotte is often in 2/2 or 4/4 time, and is characterized by small hops and a homophonic texture. The dance is marked by the raising of the feet, rather than sliding them. The gavotte is often the third movement in a classical suite, and usually follows the saraband. The Oliver Ditson Company began as a music publisher in 1835, and became one of the country's major music publishing houses in the 19th century. The company's history can be traced back to Ebenezer Batelle, who sold music from his "Boston Book Store" starting in 1783.
