But here, under Colan & writer Gerry Conway, the book veritably shouts with Colan's powerful compositions and chiaroscuro as DD and Tagak (& the latter's "brother," Opar the Leopard) pursue a villain from Tagak's extradimensional world, accessed through a mirror (!). It's pure cheese, of course, even if written by the man who later masterfully orchestrated the death of Gwen Stacy & became show-runner for LAW & ORDER, but Colan's pages, masterfully inked by Syd Shores, are an object lesson in powerful storytelling with DD & Tagak displayed in motion like classical sculpture but lit as if in a classic 1940s film noir. Colan's intriguing design of Tagak is also notable... is that his actual FACE or what? Also has a great vintage Hot Wheels ad on BC. For some of you The Nostalgia Blast from this back cover ad alone is worth the price! This 1971 15c book is definitely undergraded and underpriced, but it's priced to move. Cheap enough to be a solid reading copy, so roll it up into your back pocket and ride your Schwinn with the banana seat (& the baseball card wedged into the wheel spokes for that cardboard motorcycle engine effect) to read it under a tree in the park while sipping a wet Slurpee.
