Description: Fifth edition at the Clarendon Press at Oxford and first Oxford octavo edition. Contemporary full calf, five raised bands, red spine labels with gilt lettering, which is faded on the Volume I label but still legible. Additional gilt volume numbers, which is no longer legible on Volume I. A small chip to the tail of the spine of Volume I and larger loss at the head affecting gilt detailing. Boards in excellent condition for their age, edgewear present but original gilt tooling on edges remains visible. A former owner laid down in Volumes I and II praise for Blackstone by Charles Fox and Lord Mansfield in the former owner's hand. Joints and cords are generally tight, although Volume I's front joint is very tender. Pages are bright and clean, apparently not often used, although there is some toning and foxing throughout, with some worming in the lower right corner of Volume III, which is most apparent up to p 17. Volume II includes the Table of Consanguinity (between 202 & 203), and the Table of Descents (between 240 & 241), which folds. Glue discoloration to title pages of all Volumes and endpapers, consistent with other copies of this edition. Corners are bumped with some exposing boards underneath. A very attractive copy.
