Description: Timeless Stitches "BOY'S SACK COAT Military and Civilian" pattern TSM-765. A new pattern in the original factory fold. The pattern is available in sizes: 4,6,8 (23-25-27" chest) OR 10,12, 14 (29-30-32" chest). From the pattern: "By definition a sack coat is a "loose fitting jacket or short coat without a waist seam." Prior to the Civil War, civilian sack coats were worn for casual wear and as work coats. In 1857 the military adopted the sack coat as part of the uniform. The coat is styled so that it hangs loosely off the shoulders and falls straight to about mid-hip. This styling allows easy body movements making it the perfect jacket for working men and boys, and gives ample room for growing boys.During the Civil War, boys liked to dress in uniforms as a show of patriotism. This pattern allows mothers to make a jacket just like the soldiers. For civilian purposes, the same jacket can be made without the inside pocket. Many CDVs exist showing young lads dressed in sack coats. Some were of coarser material and meant for work clothing, others were of a finer weight wool and meant for casual dress.This pattern is for a basic, unlined regimental sack coat, that can be made in either the military or a civilian style. The designed is based on the basic sack coat used by soldiers, as described above and shown in the CDV's.". Fabric Requirements: 1-2 yards of 60" wide fabric. or 2-2 1/2 yards of 45" wide fabric depending on size. Military coat: 4 medium size military buttons.
